September 2013 Meeting Notice

On September 17th, 2013 the Korean War Veterans Association, Chapter 189 will hold its monthly Meeting at the John E. Mealy Memorial VFW Post in Port Orange, Florida.

Members arriving for lunch can arrive at 12:00 and choose their meal from the VFW Bar Menu, and socialize during the meal. The regular KWVA Business Meeting will begin at 1:00 PM.

The Speaker for our meeting this month will be Chris Kosuta, a 93 year old WWII veteran. Chris will weave a tale of this experiences in France while he was a machine gunner with Patton's 3rd Army.

Pastor Pyoung Ok Hur and the congregation of the Korean Baptist Church have invited our Chapter Veterans and spouses to a very special ceremony of gratitude for your Korean Service. The ceremony will be held at the Korean Baptist Church at 406 Silver Beach ion Daytona on September 22nd at 11am. This service of gratitude and honor will be followe by a luncheon in their banquet hall. This is strictly RSV and you must call 788.8040 or 323.6401 or 760.7163 before September 12 so they can make adequate preparations. Those whose homeland you helped save are grateful and request your presence. Please attend this gracious and memorable program.

The Department of Florida KWVA State Meeting will be held at the Paramount Plaza Hotel in Gainesville on September 27th from 10am to 4pm. The cost of the luncheon associated with the meeting is $16.00 and reservations for the luncheon and meeting must be made by September 21st, 2013. This is a good chance for the Chapter 189 members to see there is something larger than our Chapter in the KWVA. For details call 386.323.6401. As know we are currently maintaining our Korean War display at the New Smyrna Beach Museum just off Canal Street. On July 27th we had a wonderful ceremony observing the 60th Anniversary of the end of hostilities in Korea and the dedication of the Korean War Museum Display. A series of photographs taken at the event can be found under Korean War Dedication on the Home Page of this Website. The Korean War exhibit will be available for viewing at the Smyrna Museum until 15 November 2013 If you have any time and would like to greet and meet people visiting the exhibit, just contact Bob McGuire at 386.323 6401 and we will put you on the payroll.

On September 10th Volume 1 Series 3 edition of the Kimchi Kourier Newsletter went to press. This is the third newsletter published this year, for our Chapter, and it looks great. Bob McGuire is the Newsletter Editor and we owe him a debt of gratitude for the newsletter and newspaper publicity he generates on the Chapters behalf. The newsletters will be sent out to all of our members through the US Postage System. During the past several months the Chapter has been presenting the "Tell America" Program to a number of organizations. If you know an organization that might want to learn about the history of the Korean War please contact Bob McGuire at we would be pleased to set up a presentation.

We recently added a new feature to this website to allow us to post short notices between meetings that might be of interest to some of our members. These notices are posted as Post-It-Notes on a Cork-board background. To reach this Notice Board click on the block at the upper left hand side of the websites Home page marked Chapter Notices. In addition to special notices we would like to place the names of Chapter Members or their families who are sick or in need of our concern. If you have such a request and would like it posted contact Chuck Husbands at 386.760.7163.

Since the beginning of the year Chapter 189 has been serving Coffee and Donuts at the Daytona VA Clinic, on Dunn Avenue in Daytona Beach, on the last Friday of every month. We have taken the months of July, August and September off but plan to resume the program in October. Someone at the VA plugs in the coffee pot at 5:30AM and we arrive and start giving out the Coffee and Donuts at 7:30 AM. Since the beginning of the year we have met and chatted with great many veterans through this service. If you are an early raiser and just want to spend a few hours helping other Veterans come and join us. We are out of there by 10 AM or when the coffee and donuts run out, which ever comes first. If you join us I know you will come away from the experience feeling that you accomplished something positive. We really need some support on this program so if you can help out just contact Chuck Husbands or Bob McGuire at the phone numbers posted elsewhere on this page.

Final Roll Call: John Heaphy, a long time member of the KWVA and our Chapter's Quartermaster and Judge Advocate passed away on August 24th, 2013 after an extended illness. John will be sorely missed. We grieve with his wife Ruth also a faithful member of our Chapter.

Sick Call: As I write these notes, one of our Chapter 189 - Rose Balzer, the wife of Bob Balzer, is in a nursing home. Betty Fox has just returned home from the hospital and we welcome her back. Please notify us if you hear of a member who is ill or has been hospitalized so as a community we can keep them in our prayers and wish them total and speedy recovery.
