November 2014 Meeting Notice

On November 18, 2014 Chapter 189 on the Korean War Veterans Association will hold their monthly meeting at the John Mealy Memorial VFW Post in Port Orange, Florida.

Members arriving for lunch can arrive at 12:00 and choose their meal from the VFW Bar Menu, and socialize during the meal. The regular KWVA Business Meeting will begin at 1:00 PM.

This month the guest speaker will be Bob Hawes, one of the founding members of KWVA Chapter 189 and current Secretary/Treasurer of the Chapter. Bob Hawes will present a talk and slide show on "Philippine Emergency and Guerrilla Currency of WW2. Bob is president of the Greater Daytona Beach Coin club and has been a collector of coins and currency for over 60 years. He has given many lectures on numismatics thrugh the years and this the latest in his series on foreign paper currency. The general public is always welcome to our meetings, so come on in and bring a friend. (See.KWVA Postcard Notice 11-18-2014 our Recent Events Page.) At this meeting we will also hold our annual election of officers. So come and help us choice our new Chapter leaders for the 2014-2015 time period. Our Chapter President and KWVA State Commander Bob McGurie, will speak briefly on the progress being made toward the 2015 Korean War Veterans Convention which will be held in Port Orange next May, and where we could use some help in this venture.

The Treasurer will be collecting your 2014 dues - If you have not participated yet please send your check for $10 to KWVA, POB 214005, South Daytona 32121 at the meeting. Our Annual Holiday Party and Installation of Officers will be held at the next Chapter meeting on Tuesday, December 16th at 12 noon at Duff's Buffet located in the Sunshine Mall on Ridgewood Avenue in South Daytona. There will be some surprises and a gift exchange. If you want a gift, bring a gift worth aproximatly $10. Come and enjoy a good meal and wonderful fellowship.

During the past several months the Chapter has been looking for venues to present the "Tell America Program." We still have an invitation from the Navy ROTC Program at Embry-Riddle that we need to complete. If you know an organization that might want to learn about the history of the Korean War please contact Bob McGuire and he will be pleased to set up a presentation.

Sick Call: As I write these notes, I have some sad news. Bob Balzer a former President of the KWVA Department of Florida, and a good friend of our Chapter, recently passed away after a long illness. A number member of our Chapater attended his funeral in Deland. At this point I don't know of any Chapter member in the hospital. We are glad to see Tony back with us after an extended illness and long recovery. Bettsy Fox and suffered a number of problems and was recently released from a long hospitial stay. Welcome back Bettsy... Please let the President or any of the Chapter officers know of a serious illness so we can highlight it for our mutual prayers for their recovery.
