November 2013 Meeting Notice

On November 19th, 2013 the Korean War Veterans Association, Chapter 189 will hold its monthly Meeting at the John E. Mealy Memorial VFW Post in Port Orange, Florida.

Members arriving for lunch can arrive at 12:00 and choose their meal from the VFW Bar Menu, and socialize during the meal. The regular KWVA Business Meeting will begin at 1:00 PM.

The Speaker for our meeting this month will be Navy Captain Randy Lynch. Captain Lynch is presently assigned to the ROTC Program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. He will speak on this experiences and the program structure and duties involved with the training of ROTC cadets.

One of the items on October's Agenda was the organization of a slate of nominees for Chapter officers and staff positions for the next calender year. In November we will select our Chapter Officers from the list of nominees. Before the election any additional nominees for office will be accepted from the floor. Our Holiday party will be December 17th, 2013 at 1:00 PM at the Clubhouse Restaurant, Wilder Boulvard (Daytona Beach Golf Course). Wilder is off of Ridgewood, 1st light North of Belville. If you cannot make the November Meeting but will attend the holiday party, please contact Bob Hawes by email at kwva189@earthlink.net or call him by phone at 386.788.8040 for reservations. Let us know how many wil be coming and how many chicken, fish or prime rib dinners you wish to order. We need an estimate for the restaurant. Cost for the meal will be $15 per person plus gratuity.

For the last five months Chapter 189 have been maintaining our Korean War display at the New Smyrna Beach Museum just off Canal Street. On November 13th members of the Chapter disassembled the exhibit to permit the New Smyrna Beach Museum to reuse the exhibit space for their Christmas Displays. If you had donated items to the museum display, they will be available to be returned to their owners at the November 19th meeting. We currently have received several offers to move the contents of our Korean War Display to other locations, and we are considering the possibilities.

On Veteran's day November 4th, 2013 three members of our Chapter were recognized for their service to our country and our community at the Dayton State College Veteran's day Services. These members were Bob McGuire, Bob Hawes, and Ruth Heaphy. Congratulations, we too appreciate your service and we are glad to have you representing the Korean War Veterans of Chapter 189.

During the past several months the Chapter has been presenting the "Tell America" Program to a number of organizations. If you know an organization that might want to learn about the history of the Korean War please contact Bob McGuire at we would be pleased to set up a presentation.

We recently added a new feature to this website to allow us to post short notices between meetings that might be of interest to some of our members. If you have such a request and would like it posted, on the Website, contact Chuck Husbands at 386.760.7163.

Since the beginning of the year Chapter 189 has been serving Coffee and Donuts at the Daytona VA Clinic, on Dunn Avenue in Daytona Beach, on the last Friday of every month. We have taken the months off in recent months, however we would like t restart the process in the near future. Someone at the VA plugs in the coffee pot at 5:30AM and we arrive and start giving out the Coffee and Donuts at 7:30 AM. Since the beginning of the year we have met and chatted with great many veterans through this service. If you are an early raiser and just want to spend a few hours helping other Veterans come and join us. We are out of there by 10 AM or when the coffee and donuts run out, which ever comes first. If you join us I know you will come away from the experience feeling that you accomplished something positive. We really need some support to continue this program, so if you can help out, just contact Chuck Husbands or Bob McGuire at the phone numbers posted elsewhere on this page.

Final Roll Call: John Heaphy, a long time member of the KWVA and our Chapter's Quartermaster and Judge Advocate passed away on August 24th, 2013 after an extended illness. A memorial service and luncheon was be held for John at the VFW Post 3282 on Saturday October 12th at 1:00 pm. The Chapter Officers and John's Family would like to thank all who attended this memorial. John will be sorely missed.

Sick Call: As I write these notes, one of our Chapter 189 mainstays Bob Balzer a former President of the KWVA Department of Florida is recovering from a recent heart attack and associated problems. We will keep Bob in our prayers and wish him a speedy and complete recovery. This wife Rose Balzer, is also in the nursing home and our prayers are also with her.
