On Wednesday, March
15th, 2016, Chapter 189 of the Korean War
Veterans Association will hold their monthly
meeting at the John Mealy Memorial VFW
Post in Port Orange, Florida.
Members arriving for lunch
can arrive at 12:00 can choose their meal from
the VFW
Bar Menu, and socialize during the meal.
The regular KWVA Business Meeting will begin at
1:00 PM. Our program for the March meeting will
be a showing of the movie "Chosin". During the
Korean War, in the winter of 1950, 15,000 U.S.
troops were surrounded and trapped by 120,000
Chinese soldiers in the frozen mountains of
North Korea. Refusing surrender, the men
fought 78 miles to freedom and saved the lives
of 98,000 civilian refugees. After 60
years of silence, the survivors of the
Chosin Reservoir Campaign take viewers on
an emotional and heart-pounding journey through
one of the most savage battles in American
history. (See KWVA

As you know several years
ago the Chapter 189 put together a wonderful Korean
War Display for the Museum in New Smyrna. At that time
we only had the museum space for a limited time. We
recently received word that we can install, on a semi
permanent basis, our Korean War Historical Display of
memorabilia, by local veterans, in a Daytona Beach
Historical Museum. At this time it appears that space
will available and we can start installation of the
display in the museum in the June time frame. If
you have Korean War memorabilia that you would like to
place on loan for the display please contact Robert
McGuire or Robert Hawes.
As some of you may know
last year, as an outreach program, the members of
Chapter 189 served coffee and doughnuts at the VA
clinic on the last Friday of each months. The program
was well received by the Veterans going in early for
blood work. However, we suspended the program as
we did not have sufficient volunteers to manage the
program each month. Several months ago we
restarted the program and hope to continue it if we
can get volunteers. We currently have three
experienced members and we would like to get three
more members, so that each group, of two, only has to
provide the service quarterly. The task is to
get to the VA Clinic at about 7:30 AM and help serve
the coffee and doughnuts until they gone, which is
usually well before 10:00 AM. If you are looking
for a very satisfying volunteer position for a couple
of hours, four times per year contact Chuck Husbands
and we will get you signed up. The job entails
very little effort and it fits a real need serving
Veterans at the clinic. Thanks CRH.
During the past several
months the Chapter has been presenting the "Tell
America" Program to a number of organizations. If
you know an organization that might want to learn
about the history of the Korean War please contact
Bob McGuire at 396.323.6401,and he would be
pleased to set up a presentation. We are in the
process of preparing a short brochure on the
history and impact of the Korean War, to go along
with the presentation. We would like to spread the
story of the Korean Conflict for all those who may
never have heard of it, or its impact on our
current global condition.
In
recent days we have become aware that their are
Veterans in our community that have recently died
and have not been provided with an opportunity to
receive a military ceremony in their memory.
Chapter 189 of the KWVA does not
think that this is proper, and have decided to
present a small final military ceremony for any
Veteran that requests it. If you know of a Veteran that needs a
final military ceremony please contact Bob McGuire
at 386.323.6401 and we will attempt to get that
request fulfilled. If you know of someone who is sick or in the
hospital and would like a visit from a member of
the chapter have them contact Bob McGuire or
Chuck Husbands and we will try to make
a personal visit.
