March 2103 Meeting Notice

On March 19th, 2013 the Korean War Veterans Association, Chapter 189 will hold its monthly Meeting at the John E. Mealy Memorial VFW Post in Port Orange, Florida.

Members arriving for lunch can arrive at 12:00 and choose their meal from the VFW Bar Menu, and socialize during the meal. The regular KWVA Business Meeting will begin at 1:00 PM.

The speaker for the meeting will be Bob McGuire, a Vice President of the KWVA Department of Florida, a Director of KWVA Chapter 189 and Post Chaplin of VFW Post 3282. He has prepared a special presentation on the history of the Korean War, illustrate the first use of jet aircraft in combat, the first racial integration of American Forces, the first Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (MASH) and the first use of helicopters as ambulances. In addition, he will describe how twenty one UN Member Nations came together to stem the tide of Communism.

Over the past several months the Chapter has received requests from a number of organizations to speak on the History of the Korean War, and several contacted us for speakers. Bob put this presentation together as a lecture, at the request of a member the History Department to be presented at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The lecture will be presented to the students over two class periods. We have also been approached by a group from the Coronado Methodist Church in New Smyrna and a Volusia County School for a similar presentation. As 2013 has been declared by Congress as the year of the Korean Veteran, we believe we will have additional request for this type of presentation in the near future.

This month we have added a new feature to this website to allow us to post short notices between meeting that might be of interest some of our members. These notices are posted as Post-It-Notes on a Cork-board background. To reach this Notice Board click on the block at the upper left hand side of the websites Home page marked Chapter Notices. One of these notices indicate that Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will hold a Veterans Appreciation Day on April 16th, 2013. This is usually an outstanding event designed specifically for Veterans and is followed by a free BBQ lunch for the attendees. Sick Call: As I write these notes, one of our Chapter 189 mainstays John Heaphy is very sick and is presently at home. Keep him in your payers, and we wish him a total and speedy recovery.

Last Call: On March 5th a memorial service was held for Ed Deighan at VFW Post 3282. Ed passed away after an extended illness. Ed saw action as a Marine during WWII and the Korean War, was a former commander of VFW Post 3282, and a member of the KWVA. He will be sorely missed by his friends and comrades.
