June 2014 Meeting Notice

On June 17th, 2014 the Korean War Veterans Association, Chapter 189 will hold its monthly Meeting at the John E. Mealy Memorial VFW Post in Port Orange, Florida.

Members arriving for lunch can arrive at 12:00 and choose their meal from the VFW Bar Menu, and socialize during the meal. The regular KWVA Business Meeting will begin at 1:00 PM.

This month the speakers for the Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 189 will be Bob McGuire and Chuck Husbands. The speakers will discuss two current events which have taken place in the past two months. The first is the KWVA Annual General Membership Convention that was held on May 24th 2014 in Altamonte Springs, Florida. Elections for the year (2014-2015) were held at this meeting and Bob McGuire was elected the President of the KWVA Department of Florida. Chuck Husbands was elected as the 2nd Vice President for the KWVA Department of Florida at this meeting. However, a number of topics were raised and voted on a the Convention that will impact the future of the KWVA. We will attempt to address some of these topics. The second major event of this month was the invitation to Bob McGuire as the newly elected President of the KWVA Department of Florida to appear before members of the Florida Congressional Delegation in Washington DC on June 12th to address the Veteran's Adminstration (VA) health care system in Florida. At our Chapter meeting Bob will review the results of these hearings and indicate his interaction with the Florida Congressional Delegation. It is never too early or late to pay your 2014 dues - If you have not participated yet please send your check for $10 to KWVA, POB 214005, South Daytona 32121 or meet with him in person at the next meeting. During the past several months the Chapter has been looking for venues to present the "Tell America Program." We still have an invitation from the Navy ROTC Program at Embry-Riddle that we need to complete. If you know an organization that might want to learn about the history of the Korean War please contact Bob McGuire and he will be pleased to set up a presentation.

Sick Call: As I write these notes, several of our Chapter 189 mainstays are still hospitalize or under treatment. Bob Balzer a former President of the KWVA Department of Florida, and a good friend of our Chapter, is currently plagued with a number of serious problems. During this past month Bob lost his wife Rose Balzer after an extended illness. Our thoughts are also with Tony for a rapid improvement in his health and complete recovery. Tony made an appearance at the State KWVA Convention and seems to be returning to good health, although he is still undergoing treaments. Ruth Heaphy has been recovered from her recent shoulder injury is back at home and we are so very glad to have her back.
