July 2014 Meeting Notice

On July 15th, 2014 the Korean War Veterans Association, Chapter 189 will hold its monthly Meeting at the John E. Mealy Memorial VFW Post in Port Orange, Florida.

Members arriving for lunch can arrive at 12:00 and choose their meal from the VFW Bar Menu, and socialize during the meal. The regular KWVA Business Meeting will begin at 1:00 PM.

This month the speaker will be Alexander Warmka from the State of Florida Department of Agriculture, Division of Consumer Affairs. Mr. Warmka will discuss what the state does to protect senior citizens from scrams and frauds perpetrated on the elderly. He will illustrate how to recognize the more popular forms of fraud and what you should do if confronted with these schemes. It is never too early or late to pay your 2014 dues - If you have not participated yet please send your check for $10 to KWVA, POB 214005, South Daytona 32121 or meet with him in person at the next meeting. We recently received notification that a Korean all-star baseball team representing the Korean National College University Baseball Federation will be playing a series of baseball games against a team organized from the Florida Collegate Summer League. These teams will play several games in Leesburg, Deland and Sanford. Our Chapter has been invited to participate and be honored at the Deland game, to be held at the Stetson University Baseball Stadium at 6 pm on August 6th. We have been requested to furnish an honor guard and we will be trying to organize one in conjuntion with the KWVA Chapter in Deltona. Both Chapters have KWVA members in their Chapters from Deland. At the event we hope to present a plaque to the Korean Team from the KWVA Department of Florida in honor of their goodwill tour of Central Florida. As plans for this event get finalized we will let you know. Set the evening of August 6th aside on your calander, come out to the game in Deland, and give the Korean Ballplayers a welcome to our area.

During the past several months the Chapter has been looking for venues to present the "Tell America Program." We still have an invitation from the Navy ROTC Program at Embry-Riddle that we need to complete. If you know an organization that might want to learn about the history of the Korean War please contact Bob McGuire and he will be pleased to set up a presentation.

Sick Call: As I write these notes, several of our Chapter 189 mainstays are still hospitalize or under treatment. Bob Balzer a former President of the KWVA Department of Florida, and a good friend of our Chapter, is currently plagued with a number of serious problems. Our thoughts are also with Tony for a rapid improvement in his health and complete recovery. Tony made an appearance at the State KWVA Conventio in May and seems to be returning to good health, although he is still undergoing treaments. During this last month Nancy McGuire had an accident and shattered her elbow. We are glad to report that Nancy is on the mend and in good spirits.
